Due to the zika virus and dengue fever, I have done some research (via Internet and friends) to find out which plants help to repel mosquitoes. I noticed that some plants can repel mosquitoes
ONLY if you crush the leaves of the plant to release the odor. Hence, be careful about this point when you come across an article, telling you that a plant can repel mosquitoes.
One plant that can help to repel mosquitoes without crushing the leaves is Pandan. Yes, the Pandan as in those Pandan cake that we eat.
In order to make it effective, have
a several pots of Pandan around your home. Importantly, it also depends on the
wind direction and ventilation in your apartment.

I did not manage to find the scientific studies that Pandan repel mosquitoes. But the following are the facts that I know of:
- It is common in South East Asia that people keep pandan leaves in the car boot to repel insects such as cockroaches.
- I have a friend who has a bedridden husband. She likes gardening; However she is concerned that his husband get bitten by mosquitoes, which can cause itchiness, putrid, hence many complications. She has so many plants at home that the NEA officers actually placed some devices at her apartment, for a period of time, to check for the presence of mosquitoes.
- The verdict? "Not a single mosquito was detected," she claimed. She contributed this to the several pots of Pandan located in her apartment.
- Note that I did not manage to find any scientific studies that Pandan can repel mosquitoes. The above findings are based on words of mouth and personal accounts.
At this juncture, you may ask - does the very famous "Mosquito plant" repel mosquitoes?
It is a myth; "Mosquito plant" does not repel mosquitoes.
